Unit Plan
Unit Overview Simon says, follow me.
What will you teach, when will you teach it?
> The unit that I am teaching is 3.4: Analyse a contemporary ethical issue in relation to wellbeing. In specific, the ethical issue is; Should the media be allowed to advertise their products through any means even if it results in negative implications on our societies mental and physical wellbeing?
The media frequently perpetuates unrealistic body images and ideals on to our society. As a direct implication of this, a myriad of social, physical and mental issues have surfaced. In today's society, our access to the internet and exposure to technology platforms that make the media's power stretch make it near impossible to avoid these messages. Up and coming society will not know how to address these concerns and are likely to embed psychological issues of self-esteem to other health concerns. Students will learn about what the body is across a large variety of different countries and nationalities, they will learn about the impacts that the media has on communities and people. I plan to teach this topic at the beginning of the year, in term 1.
The follow AO’s that this unit encompasses are:
AO Lvl 8 A1 Personal growth and development
AO Lvl 8A3 Safety management
D3 Rights, responsibilities, and laws
AO Lvl 8 D4 People and the environment
How and when will you assess the student learning?
> A number of formative and summative assessments will be utilized to ensure learning throughout and to the conclusion of the unit. These formative assessment tools will be used to inform my teaching and where I need to direct the students. It will also influence the timing at which I will complete learning activities and tasks.
> The summative assignment consists of a health promotion which targets primary children audiences and older about the dangerous of the media. This assignment can be done as a pamphlet, magazine, documentary, essay, blog, podcast or powerpoint presentation. Students alternatively can ask to use their own method but it has to be validated by the teacher, and at the same time answer the necessary information. This idea has been adopted from the assessment resource 3.4 A, and health assessment conditions where it states that students need to have a large variety of options for assessment. Ideally, this caters for a wide range of learning, and skill levels. Upon design, students must include SPEECHE in relation to media and its impact on society and wellbeing.
